Survey Question Types

Qrvey includes a wide variety of question types you can include in your surveys. In this document, we'll review the types of questions you can ask, how to best use each of the choices and, at the end, some advanced question options.

Multiple Choice

Multiple choice questions are great for allowing respondents to choose from a variety of responses.  Simply type in your question in the top box, then add up to 15 answers below. Click the (+) icon to add additional answers, or the (-) icon to remove answers.

Below your answers, you have the option to add an Other field, which will allow respondents to type in a short answer less than 100 characters.  There is also an option to allow respondents to select multiple answers.

You can also add branching, which are follow up questions depending on which answer a respondent chooses for this question.  For more information on branching, click here.

Once you are happy with your question, you can move onto the next question. Your work is always being saved in the background.

Yes/No

Yes/No questions are similar to multiple choice, except that they only offer two answers. You can modify what those choices are, but you're limited to just the two. If you need an Other field, multiple selections or more answer options, then a multiple choice question would be a better option.

Yes/No questions also support branching.

Slide Bar

Slide bars allow your respondents to choose their answer on a sliding scale. They are best used for ordinal questions that gauge "how much" a person agrees or disagrees with your question.  This is an example of what your respondents will see:

Building a slide bar is easy.  Simply type in your question, along with the values for the two endpoints. You can then choose how many steps you'd like between the lowest and highest value.

Ranking

Ranking allows your respondents to order a list of items using a simple drag-and-drop motion. To build a ranking question, just type in the options you'd like your respondents to choose from. For the most unbiased results, your options should be as random as possible.

Numeric

Numeric questions allow you to ask questions that require a simple numeric answer. Qrvey offers a few options to ensure your respondents enter their numbers in the format you're looking for.

First, you can choose to allow, or not allow, decimal points. Next, you can choose the type of number you're looking for.  General allows for digits without comma separators (ie: zip codes), while Number will automatically insert comma separators. Currency automatically adds a "$" to respondent answers and Percentage will add a "%" sign.

Date

Date questions allow your respondents to enter a date as their answer.  They will be provided with a simple date picker to make their selection quickly and accurately.

Short Text

Hear what your respondents have to say in their own words by using the Short Text question type.  Similar to a text message or tweet, short text answers are limited to just 120 characters.

Long Text

For those times when 120 characters is just not enough, you can choose a Long Text question type that will allow for up to 500 character answers.

Rating

Rating questions show your respondents a familiar five-star scale from which they can choose between one and five stars.

Expression

Expression questions are a great way to determine how a respondent feels about a certain topic by letting them choose up to three words from a predetermined list that you provide.

Start by entering your question, then adding the words you'd like your respondents to choose from.  Separate words by using commas or the space bar.

If you choose to Activate categories your word list will be divided into "positive" and "negative" categories.  Your respondents will first choose whether they feel good or bad about your question, then choose from only the words in that category.

Image

Image questions allow respondents to choose between two and 15 images that you provide. You may upload or link to any JPG, GIF or PNG image. The preferred image dimensions are 420x250 pixels and all images will be scaled to fit those dimensions. Images can be uploaded from your local computer or you can provide a link to any image you find online.

Once you've uploaded your images, be sure to give each option a name below the image.

Adding Text

Sometimes, you might want to add a bit of text to introduce or explain a question or provide extra information at the end of a questionnaire. Adding text between questions is a great way to accomplish both tasks.  Simply click the (+) icon where you'd like to add your message, then select Add Text as seen below.

Finally, just type the message you'd like to add and you'll be all set.  Messages are shown to respondents as interim steps between your questions.

Optional Questions

By default, respondents are required to answer all of your qrvey questions. If you'd like to give your respondents the option to skip any of your survey questions, you can mark it as Make Optional from the lower right corner of the question panel as seen below.

Favorite Questions

Qrvey makes it easy to reuse questions in multiple surveys by marking them as favorites.  To add a favorite question, just select Add as a favorite from the lower-right question menu as shown below.

You may add a favorite question to any survey by clicking Add from favorites at the bottom of your qrvey.

From the Favorites panel, you can choose to add one or multiple favorites.  You may also delete favorites that you no longer need from the favorites panel by selecting them and then clicking Delete Question
